Project Overview
The project included replacing the entire flat roof of a house in the Bronx, New York. The primary goal was to completely restore the waterproofing function of the roofing system, enhance its drainage capabilities, and provide a long-lasting solution to weather and leak issues.
Heavy rain and snow fall, standing water and seasonal temperature fluctuations are constant challenges on flat roofs in the Bronx. These conditions can lead to failure of the membrane over time, water ponding, cracks, and inside water leakage problems. All of these concerns have been addressed with the complete change out of the roof system in this project.

Existing Roof Condition
The current flat roof was nearing end-of-life. There were evidence of deterioration such as:
- Water ponding at several locations
- The cracking and wear of the surface membrane.
- Weak waterproofing layers
- Heavy rain can cause risk of leakage.Heavy rains can lead to risk of leakage.
- Reduced drainage performance
- The issues were such that a complete replacement was required to avoid any further damage to the structure and water intrusion inside.
Old Roof Removal and Preparation
The existing roofing system was carefully removed to the base of the roof. Any damaged or wet materials were removed to give a clean and stable surface.
The roof deck was then closely examined to see if there are any sections that are weak or have rotted. The necessary repairs were done to make sure a good base for the new roofing system was provided.
The surface preparation was crucial to ensure the longevity of the roofing system and adherence of the new roofing layers.
New Flat Roof Installation
A new high performance flat roofing system has been installed to ensure the highest waterproofing protection and durability.
The installation included:
- Waterproof membrane system of high quality
- Tightened joints and edges at all points.
- Avoiding damp patches in the yard and driveway.
- Drains and roof penetrations around them were reinforced.
The new system should be designed to avoid water pooling and ensure a good flow of water towards the drainage points.
Drainage Improvement Work
Special attention was paid to the improvement of the roof drainage system. Slope correction and alignment of outlets implemented to minimise water accumulation.
This helps to:
- Avoid having standing water / ponding
- Minimize long-term membrane stresses
- Improve roof lifespan
- Protect interior ceilings and walls from damage.
Final Result
The property has now a completely upgraded and waterproof flat roof system. The new installation will offer greater protection from heavy rain, snow and seasonal Bronx weather.
The home is now safer from leaking, structural damage and long term moisture problems, and is optimized for overall roof performance and reliability.
