Shingle Roof Replacement in Whitestone, NY

Project Showcase

Project Overview

RH Renovation NYC completed a full shingle roof replacement at 18-03 Clintonville St in Whitestone, NY, tearing off the existing roofing system down to the deck and installing a complete GAF roofing package: Tiger Paw underlayment, Weather Watch Ice & Water Shield at every vulnerable point, and Timberline HDZ shingles across the entire house. The project is backed by a 25-Year GAF Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty, GAF’s top-tier coverage that requires a Master Elite® contractor to install.

Because RH Renovation NYC is a GAF Master Elite® contractor, this installation qualifies for the Golden Pledge system-level warranty rather than a standard materials-only guarantee — a distinction that matters when a roof includes several interconnected GAF components rather than a single product.

Full Tear-Off and Deck Preparation

The crew removed the existing shingle roof across the entire house, along with the old roof air vents, plumbing pipe boots, and step flashing. Stripping every component down to the deck — rather than layering new shingles over old — let us fully inspect the plywood sheathing underneath.

Any damaged plywood sheets found during tear-off were repaired at no additional cost to the homeowner. Replacing weakened decking before installation is what keeps fasteners holding properly and prevents soft spots from telegraphing through the finished roof.

Drip Edge and GAF WeatherWatch Ice & Water Shield

New drip edge was installed around the entire roof perimeter, directing water away from the fascia and into the gutters instead of behind them. From there, the crew installed GAF WeatherWatch Ice & Water Shield along all roof edges, around every plumbing pipe penetration and roof air vent, and along the side of the parapet wall that separates the neighbor’s roof from this one.

That parapet wall detail is a common condition on attached and semi-attached homes in dense Queens neighborhoods like Whitestone, where two roofs meet at a shared party wall. It’s also one of the more frequent leak points on this type of house, since wind-driven rain and ice can work their way along that seam if it isn’t properly shielded — which is why it received the same ice-and-water protection as the plumbing penetrations and roof edges.

GAF Tiger Paw Underlayment and Timberline HDZ Shingles

With the ice-and-water shield in place, the crew installed GAF Tiger Paw synthetic underlayment across the full roof — a slip-resistant base layer that protects the deck during construction and adds a secondary water barrier beneath the shingles.

New GAF starter strip shingles were installed along the eaves and rakes, followed by GAF Timberline HDZ shingles across the entire roof. Timberline HDZ is GAF’s high-definition architectural shingle line, built with a wider nailing zone designed to improve fastening accuracy and wind resistance compared to older shingle profiles.

Ventilation, Flashing, and Ridge Cap

New GAF roof air vents were installed to replace the old units removed during tear-off, keeping the attic properly ventilated year-round. New step flashing was installed at roof-to-wall transitions where the existing flashing needed replacement, and the roof was finished with new GAF ridge cap shingles along the ridge line for a sealed, uniform cap.

Gutter Cleaning and Site Cleanup

As part of project completion, all gutters around the house were cleaned. If your Whitestone or Queens property also needs gutter repair or replacement alongside a roofing project, see our gutter services for the full scope of what we offer.

Once installation was complete, the crew removed all roofing debris generated during the project and left the property clean.

25-Year GAF Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty

This project is backed by a 25-Year GAF Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty, subject to GAF system requirements and registration. The Golden Pledge tier is only available through GAF Master Elite® contractors and covers the full GAF roofing system installed together — underlayment, ice-and-water shield, shingles, and ventilation — rather than treating each product as a separate, isolated warranty.

Final Result

The Whitestone property now has a complete GAF shingle roofing system, from the deck up: repaired plywood, new drip edge, ice-and-water protection at every vulnerable point including the shared parapet wall, Tiger Paw underlayment, Timberline HDZ shingles, new ventilation, and a 25-year manufacturer warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GAF Golden Pledge Limited Warranty?

The Golden Pledge is GAF’s highest-tier roofing warranty, available only through GAF Master Elite® certified contractors. It covers the full installed roofing system — not just the shingles — and is subject to GAF’s system requirements and project registration.

Why replace step flashing and air vents instead of reusing the old ones?

Step flashing and roof air vents are removed during tear-off and inspected for corrosion, warping, or gaps that develop over years of exposure. Reusing worn components under a new shingle system risks leaks at exactly the transitions the new roof is supposed to protect, so components showing wear are replaced with new GAF parts.

What does ice-and-water shield at a parapet wall protect against?

A parapet wall between two adjoining roofs is a common leak point on attached homes, since wind-driven rain and ice can travel along that seam. Installing self-adhering ice-and-water shield along that edge — the same protection used at roof edges and pipe penetrations — closes off that path before shingles go down.

What’s the difference between GAF Tiger Paw underlayment and older felt underlayment?

Tiger Paw is a synthetic underlayment, which is lighter, more tear-resistant, and less slippery to walk on during installation than traditional asphalt-saturated felt, while still providing a secondary water barrier beneath the shingles.
