Project: Chimney Rebuilding Service in the Bronx

RH Renovation NYC completed a comprehensive structural chimney restoration project featuring deteriorated masonry teardown, full brickwork reconstruction, custom stainless steel flue liner installation, poured concrete crown forming, and custom lead step flashing integration for a residential property located in The Bronx, NYC. Chimney stacks across the dense urban environment of The Bronx face aggressive microclimatic pressures—including extreme freeze-thaw expansion cycles, thermal stress from seasonal heating, driving wind-driven rain, and heavy atmospheric pollution.

Over time, moisture infiltration through degraded mortar joints and cracked chimney caps causes structural spalling, brick fracture, and flue tile deterioration. A compromised chimney flue poses serious fire safety hazards, risks carbon monoxide backdrafting into living spaces, and leads to water migration through internal framing and roof decking. This project was engineered to systematically dismantle the hazardous masonry above the roofline, reconstruct the brick stack using high-strength weather-resistive materials, and install an airtight, corrosion-resistant stainless steel flue liner to ensure complete home combustion safety and structural weatherproofing.

Comprehensive Scope of Work & Installation Methodology

To satisfy strict New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) building codes and NFPA 211 chimney safety standards, our licensed and insured Bronx masonry specialists executed a multi-phase technical installation protocol:

  • Controlled Demolition & Roof Surface Defense: Technicians erected heavy-duty staging and installed protective decking covers around the roof line. The hazardous, cracked masonry stack was systematically dismantled down to sound structural brickwork below the roofline.

  • Structural Masonry Reconstruction & Crown Forming: Utilizing solid, high-density face bricks laid with high-strength Type N exterior-grade mortar, the chimney stack was rebuilt to code height. A custom reinforced, wash-sloped concrete chimney crown was poured over the top course to shed water cleanly away from the brick face.

  • Stainless Steel Flue Liner Insertion & Insulation: A heavy-gauge, flexible continuous stainless steel flue liner was installed through the entire length of the chimney chase. The liner was insulated with a high-density ceramic blanket/vermiculite mix to maintain optimal thermal draft temperatures and protect surrounding combustible building structures.

  • Roof Line Lead Step & Counter-Flashing Integration: New custom-bent lead step flashings were woven into surrounding roof shingle courses, and heavy-gauge lead counter-flashings were deeply embedded into the mortar joint bed lines, forming a watertight seal at the critical roof-to-masonry intersection.

  • Siloxane Waterproofing & Quality Assurance Audit: A deep-penetrating siloxane breathable water-repellent coating was applied across the exterior brickwork. A smoke-draft test and thorough multi-point safety inspection were conducted to verify chimney ventilation and structural stability, followed by a complete magnetic cleanup.

Project Highlights & Technical Specifications

  • Service Category: Complete Structural Chimney Reconstruction, Flue Relining & Masonry Weatherproofing
