New Gutter Installation on Flat Roof in the Bronx

RH Renovation NYC completed a comprehensive low-slope flat roof eave reconstruction and rainwater management project featuring fascia/faceboard replacement, low-slope rubber membrane layer overlay, custom heavy-gauge aluminum edge flashing, protective gutter filtration, and high-capacity gutter installation along the rear elevation of a property located in The Bronx, NYC. Rear flat roof eaves on multi-family and commercial buildings throughout The Bronx bear the brunt of heavy, concentrated water runoff. Regional environmental pressures—including severe winter freeze-thaw expansion, driving rain from seasonal nor’easters, and accumulated organic roof debris—frequently break down legacy roof edges and gutter connections.

When a flat roof edge suffers from rotted faceboards or failing edge flashings, water backs up behind the roof margin rather than discharging cleanly into the drainage system. Trapped moisture deteriorates structural timber framing, saturates exterior walls, and causes internal ceiling leaks. This project was engineered to rebuild the structural rear roof edge from the framing level up, lay down a durable rubber membrane waterproofing layer, install custom aluminum edge flashings, and mount a gutter assembly equipped with debris filtration for long-term, clog-free rainwater displacement.

Comprehensive Scope of Work & Installation Methodology

To satisfy strict New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) codes and national commercial roofing guidelines, our licensed and insured Bronx restoration crew executed a precise, multi-phase technical protocol:

  • Rear Eave Demolition & Structural Faceboard Replacement: Technicians systematically removed all deteriorated gutters, rotted edge metal, and decayed wooden fascia boards along the rear flat roof perimeter. Rotted structural wood framing was replaced with fresh, pressure-treated lumber, establishing a square, plumb, and high-load-bearing faceboard foundation.

  • Targeted Rubber Roof Layer Overlay: A heavy-duty polyester-reinforced SBS/APP modified bitumen rubber layer (Firestone 180) was installed over the low-slope roof edge zone. The rubber membrane was fully adhered/torch-fused across the substrate, extending over the rear roof margin to create a seamless, flexible waterproof transition.

  • Custom Brake-Formed Aluminum Edge Flashing: Custom-bent, heavy-gauge aluminum drip edge flashings were fabricated on-site and installed along the new faceboard perimeter. This metal flashing directs all water sheet-flow directly into the gutter trough without allowing capillary moisture to wick back into the new fascia wood or subdeck framing.

  • Seamless Gutter & Downspout Integration: A heavy-gauge, high-capacity gutter system was custom-fitted and mounted to the newly installed faceboard using heavy-duty internal hidden hangers anchored into structural rafter ends. The assembly was pitch-calibrated to drive rapid water velocity toward downspout drops.

  • Gutter Guard Filter System & Perimeter Sealing: Protective gutter filtration guards were fitted across the entire gutter run to stop leaves, sediment, and urban debris from clogging downspout channels. All lap joints, corner miters, and termination edges were sealed with high-grade, non-sag polyurethane sealants.

  • Final Quality Assurance & Water-Flow Test: A high-volume water-flow test verified that water drains fluidly across the new rubber membrane, over the custom aluminum drip edge, through the filter guards, and out through the downspout system without any perimeter leakage.

Results & Property Owner Value

By completely rebuilding the rear flat roof eave, installing a Firestone rubber waterproofing layer, and integrating a custom aluminum-flashed gutter system with protective filters, RH Renovation NYC permanently eliminated rear water overflow risks. The Bronx property owner now enjoys complete structural protection against roof-edge water backup, zero maintenance from debris clogs, and long-term peace of mind.
