Project: New Roof Shingle Installation Service in the Bronx

RH Renovation NYC completed a total steep-slope roof replacement and structural waterproofing upgrade featuring complete legacy shingle tear-off, timber subdeck sheathing remediation, self-adhering ice-and-water shield laydown, high-tensile synthetic underlayment installation, and high-wind architectural shingle weaving for a residential home located in The Bronx, NYC. Residential structures throughout urban Bronx corridors face continuous microclimatic pressures—including severe winter freeze-thaw cycles, high wind-shear gusts funneled between city streets, heavy downpours from seasonal nor’easters, and intense summer UV exposure.

When an aging asphalt shingle roof suffers from tab seal breakdown, granule loss, or structural wood deck moisture saturation, water bypasses the outer primary barrier. Trapped water quickly degrades underlying timber rafters, causes interior plaster/drywall staining, compromises attic insulation performance, and risks structural framing rot. This project was engineered to deliver a complete roof envelope renewal: stripping away compromised materials, reinforcing the structural substrate, establishing multi-tier leak defense, and precision-installing high-wind architectural shingles engineered for long-term regional durability.

Comprehensive Scope of Work & Installation Methodology

To satisfy strict New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) residential building codes and national roofing standards, our licensed and insured Bronx roofing specialists carried out a multi-phase technical installation protocol:

  • Complete System Tear-Off & Substrate Inspection: Technicians systematically removed all layers of deteriorated legacy shingles, failed felt paper, and damaged flashings down to the bare timber roof deck. A comprehensive structural inspection was conducted across exposed plywood sheathing and rafter tails to identify hidden framing rot or subdeck weakness.

  • Subdeck Remediation & Structural Deck Stabilization: Compromised, soft, or delaminated plywood panels were excised and replaced with structural CDX exterior-grade plywood sheathing, double-fastened to roof joists to establish a flat, nail-tight fastening base.

  • Self-Adhering Ice-and-Water Membrane Barrier Laydown: Heavy-duty rubberized self-adhering ice-and-water shield membranes were applied continuously along high-stress eave margins, rake edges, valley intersections, and chimney transitions. This creates an impenetrable secondary seal against water backups caused by winter ice dams and wind-driven rain.

  • High-Tensile Synthetic Underlayment Application: High-performance, tear-resistant synthetic underlayment was installed across the remaining roof field. This provides superior UV resistance and secondary moisture defense compared to traditional asphalt felt paper.

  • Architectural Shingle Weaving & High-Wind Fastening Schedule: Premium dimensional architectural asphalt shingles were installed using an engineered six-nail fastening pattern per shingle course. Starter strip shingles were locked along eave and rake perimeters to guarantee maximum resistance against high urban wind-shear uplift.

  • Flashing Refurbishment & Final Quality Control Audit: Heavy-gauge aluminum drip edge flashings, step flashings at wall intersections, and plumbing vent boots were integrated and sealed with industrial non-sag exterior polyurethane lap sealants. A thorough multi-point roof tightness inspection was conducted, followed by a complete magnetic ground sweep to clear all metal debris.
